Room 109 : The Promise of a Portfolio Classroom
Published in Paperback by Boynton/Cook (November, 1997)
Author: Richard Kent
Average review score:

Shows the awsome potential of individualized instruction
This book is a must for any educator that is interested in portfolio assessment and individualized student curriculum. Although the focus is on english, all educators can benefit from the examples and ideas that are presented in this enjoyable and easy to read book. Inspiring and informational!

A must-read for teachers, parents, and students alike!
Rich Kent embodies the metaphor "teacher as guide." In this text, he uses example of the richness of student input in something that is so much more than just a "how-to" approach to portfolios and portfolio assessment. I strongly encourage a deep reading of this text to make meaning of the real purpose, process, product of student learning.

A portfolio classroom is the way to go.
As a student of Room 109, I have experienced the use of portfolio's as a teaching aid. What a wonderful way to teach your classrooms so that a student can explore and learn on an individual basis. If you walk into Room 109, you experience the magic ad artistry that this idea has brought about. As we come into the 21st century, the views on how we teach must change with the times. Portfolio's are a new, and much needed change to traditional teaching. The book provides a "how to" for starting this type of class.

The Best A & P Study Guide
Do you want an "A" and still have a life? Then buy this book. I've gotten A's from my first two A&P classes because of it.

I have no science background. The assigned textbook is so huge I avoid looking at it as much as possible. Instead, I rely on my lecture notes and Schaum's when ever I can. Yes, there are times I am forced to use my assigned text, but there are plenty of times when Schaum's covers the point without wasting my time, and highlights important concepts as well.

So do yourself a favor and buy this Outline...unless you like the idea of going blind over a 50 pound tome while your social life withers and dies from neglect.

Concise but thorough review of Anatomy and Physiology
This book is great if you don't like reading long textbooks. It's easy to read and makes Anatomy and Physiology more interesting. I was recommended this book from a friend who used this book and another study guide and got over a 90 average. The other two books I highly recommend are the following:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Vol 1) ISBN: 0971999619
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Vol 2) ISBN: 0971999627
The last two study guide showed me the kind of questions I saw on my college exams. My friend was right. I used these 3 books and also got an "A" in my college A and P class.

Good Resource for Applying Your Knowledge
I just completed my first semester of Anatomy and Physiology.

Everyone had told me that "repetition, repetition, repetition" was the key to getting the grade in this class. Our textbook did have a handful of review questions at the end of each chapter and the CD-ROM included also had quizzes to take.

I was doing the questions and quizzes, like everyone else in my class, but kept getting lower than desirable marks on my nearly daily quizzes.

After I bought this book and studied from it, I saw a dramatic increase in my scores. My lab partner was shocked that I had done so much better than her. She is a fast learner and typically gets perfect scores. I told her about this outline, she immediately bought a copy, and together we both finished the course with A's.

I think it is important to test your knowledge by applying it. The more resources, the better. If you are like me, you easily tire at looking at the same pages over and over. This book gave organized summaries and had excellent Q&A's.

At the price of around $12, it is worth the money!

The Coming Evangelical Crisis: Current Challenges to the Authority of Scripture and the Gospel
Published in Paperback by Moody Publishers (June, 1997)
Authors: R. Kent Hughes, John, Jr. MacArthur, R. C. Sproul, Michael S. Horton, Albert, Jr. Mohler, and John H. Armstrong
Average review score:

Beware, Church
Horton and others clearly delineate the dangers which face the Church of Jesus Christ, and if you're looking for fluff or easy reading, here, find another book like Max Lucado. This is meaty reading and worthy of the purchase. Highly recommended.

The Warning is Clear
Some of the conservative church's greatest ambassadors deliver a great message in this book. Some very godly and inteligent men deliver a warning to the church of the future. The books basic theme is that the church must be circumspect so that it does not drift away from biblical dependence. The present day church has come to depend on so many sources for their theological understanding when ultimately scripture should be the only recognized voice. This book defends the traditional evangelical faith while giving and understanding of obvious needs of reform. Readers of this book will become acutely aware of the problems and solutions of the modern godly church.

It is a fantastic book!
With regard the authority of Scripture, most Christians would agree that the Bible is our authority in some sense. But in exactly what sense does the Bible claim to be our authority? I think evangelical Christianity is in serious trouble in that matter. In fact, it is facing big challenges for keeping Biblical faith. Some present-day evangelicals do not believe more in the Bible. The Scripture becomes just a very important thing, but not more a sufficient an inerrant Word of God. In their opinion, we have other sources to learn about God and his will for the Church today. So, if you are considering that questions into your heart, I would like to recommend you to read this book and The Compromised Church (from the same general Editor).

Absolute Favorite
This book is by far my favorite childhood book. It was a nightly read for my family.
I was shocked to see out out of print and commanding such a high price. I would highly recommed this book. It is well worth the price that you might need to pay for it.

Fat Cat Rules! This Book Is Available From the Publisher!!!
This is an excellent book. I first learned of it when my brother, whose children are grown, would only loan it to me. ...

Awesome - Most memorable book of my childhood
My sister, and I, still talk about this book and all the stuff the little cat eats. Many creative characters with interesting names you will never forget. A must have. Very clean, nothing objectionable. Our favorite.

A Real Keeper!
Looking for a keeper? Look no further than Alison Kent as she's done it again with FOUR MEN AND A LADY. Wonderful characters that will stay in your heart for many, many years with an unforgettable story and sizzling romance in that perfect Kent style!

Very Highly Recommended!!!
"A scintillating novel that again proves opposites attract. Like magnets hero and heroine come together in a conflagration that threatens to set the pages of FOUR MEN AND A LADY on fire, blazing with passion and fueled with larger then life characters. A delight to read a story that features relationships based on friendship between four men and a woman. Especially when told in high school day's flashbacks that relate the insecurities, challenges, and doubts of teenagers caught in the vortex of the quantum leap from adolescents to adulthood. Written with empathy and wit, it is obvious that Alison Kent draws on life experiences and relates them in a manner that endears and edifies. Attend the reunion -- be a fly on the wall -- you don't want to miss one minute of the fun and action."

Don't miss one of the best books of 1999!
Alison Kent has created five unique, real people you will swear you knew in high school. She gets it all right; from the skillfully done flashbacks, and the completely natural and humorous dialogue between friends, to the emotionally charged passion between Ben and Heidi. FOUR MEN AND A LADY is a romantic masterpiece and a trip down memory lane that will have you laughing and shedding a few tears. Don't miss one of the best books of 1999!!

Mrs. Mooley
Published in Hardcover by Artists & Writers Guild Books (June, 1993)

Classic Returns
My parents bought this book for me in 1973. It has always inspired me to try harder no matter what. I now share my copy with my children and plan to buy a copy for each of them. This book would make a wonderful first book for any child (a baby shower gift for my brother)or an addition to any adult's book collection. Buy it, share it and live by Ms. Mooley's moto "all it takes is a little practice and determination"

Mrs. Mooley
This is an excellent children's book. I totally disagree with Hook's assessment that this is uninspired. It has inspired our family. Anytime something is difficult my 5 year old states "anything is possible with a little practice and determination".

This cow makes her dream possible even in the face of others laughing at her. A good lesson in "not having to go along with the crowd and peer pressure".

My Two Year Old Can't Get Enough of This Book
Several times a day my two year old will place himself squarely in front of my wife or myself and simply demand "Mrs. Mooley!"

That's about the best endorsement I can give for a children's book.

This tale is of a cow who is inspired by a misplaced book of nursery rhymes to accomplish one -- the cow jumping over the moon.

All of the other animals laugh at Mrs. Mooley as she practices for her attempt. Their laughter turns to wide eyed adoration as she clears the moon on her final attempt, just as dawn is breaking over the barnyard.

As Mrs. Mooley states: "all it takes is a little practice and determination."

Passage to Mutiny
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Random House of Canada Ltd. (April, 1996)
Author: Kent
Average review score:

South Seas plunder
A sequel to Command a King's Ship, Bolitho sails his Tempest farther east into the contested fringes of the British, Spanish and French empires. Capt. Bolitho is among the the islands in the Great South Sea, which is not so Pacific as it echoes to thunderous broadsides and murderous intrigue. Mutiny is in the air again. The state-sponsored (merchantile) economy of peacetime England is rotten, royalist France is in turmoil before its revolution, and the amazing Bligh has survived the mutiny on the Bounty. We see Polynesia in a more exciting time, when traders and free booters were only just entering islands of lovely but deadly natives amid the clash of unsettled national interests and claims. Bolitho has finally met his match in the form of an utterly ruthless and clever pirate who outwits Bolitho time and again, despite the desperate courage of his lieutenants. Kent has again come up with a wonderfully evil pirate to fight, even though we hardly meet him. Is Bolitho too besotted with his love for Viola, who has returned with her husband to develop an island colony? Unfortunately Kent makes Viola's husband so wholly irredeemable there's no tension there. Into this comes a French frigate under a tyrannical captain just as news of the outbreak of the French Revolution roils the tense waters and dubious loyalties further. The effects of tropical heat are graphically displayed, and the implacable scourge of fever finally makes its appearance in the series.

Mr Kent does it again, another wonderful Bolitho story
Mr Kent proves once more that he is a master story teller. This book is alive with characters who face a series of dangerous adventures in the service of their king. The story has everything: brigands, upturned cannon, splintered decks, heroic struggle against the odds, friendship, romance, some terrific dialog and character developement, hostile islanders, Royal Marines, some rather bloody battles and above it, Richard Bolitho stands true to his calling. The plot and sub plots are splendidly told and fill the pages with attention to detail, a rich feel for the time period and Allday backing his captain with his broad back and gleaming cutlass.
Great stuff to read on a rainy afternoon by a crackling fire.
What is great about the Kent books is the fact that as in real life, people arrive, influence, some move on and others die. Told with flair and a bold descriptive style makes Kent's books some of my very favorite.
Enjoy

the best book in the series
Passage to Mutiny was my first Bolitho adventure. I have read them all, but nothing captured my imagination quite as much as this one. Bolitho and his crew set out to find Eurotas, which was captured by pirates. The relationships between Bolitho and Herrick; and Bolitho and Viola; are vivid and bring out Bolitho's character to enhance the suspensful plot. The fight on the beach ending with Herrick having his back to the sea as a final desperate measure while Tempest's launch arrives just in time to save them kept me on the edge of my seat. I don't think I breathed for at least two chapters. It was one of the most satisfying reads I have ever had.

ASP.NET Security

Average review score:

Wha?
Lot's of good recommedations, but not focused enough. Maybe it's because .NET security is still a hodege-pod of techniques that has no roadmap to follow. Geez...I still don't know what technique(s) to use for a particular situation. I can figure it out, but if I have to do that, what's the sense of buying the book?

Good, no-nonsense stuff
I'm enjoying this book. The authors break things down thoroughly, providing numerous approaches to a particular task, for example, authentication. They provide concepts first and then apply it using differnt methods, for example, authenticating a user from credentials stored in XML file, SQL db, etc.

Nothing seems to be skipped in this book regarding the topics they cover. It leaves little if nothing to be desired.

Well done Wrox!

essential
I m surprised at the book not being reviewed enough. It s an absolute essential, very well written and real-world wise. I think most people go for language books, ignoring such importand matters as security. How are they planning to deploy their web apps, I wonder.

One of the first things to learn from the book is that security is not only an administrator's task but half the job needs to be done by the developer. And that 's where this book comes in. I feel much more confident after reading it, all my question are answered.

A bravo! to WROX for doing it again.

Construction Law & Risk Management: Case Notes and Articles
Published in Paperback by Ardent Publications (April, 2003)
Authors: J. Kent Holland and J. Kent Holland Jr.
Average review score:

compilation
True to the preface, this books compiles cases of law in construction, organizes them in a very useful index to subjects and table of contents for reference. The cases have been prepared by a large group of experts in the industry.

Specific Points or Overview
This book is an excellent resource for any one who is in Construction or deals with Contractors. If you need to know a specific point, the concise but well reasoned sections provide you an answer. Also, if you want an overview of Construction Risk, the book as a whole can do that.
This book should be utilized by Contractors, Insurance Brokers and Carriers and Attorneys. I have been a Contractor, Broker and Attorney and find it useful. I have used it as a resource and a way to review this arena. Take this book to lunch and read a few sections at a time.
As I do Construction Risk Consulting for Contractors, I find that this recap is an excellent way of keeping aware and it has provided resources for my business.

Good Solid Advice
This book is well written, making it a pleasure to read. In addition, the author has provided case references so additional details can be readily obtained if needed (plus it makes everything read with more credibility). I find the practical advise at the end of each article to be very useful and good solid advice. Since purchasing the book just a few weeks ago, two sections have proved to be immediately beneficial: Section 24 on Surety and Section 19 on Site Safety Risk and Responsibility.
